WOMEN’S cricket has made its first impact on Bangladesh with an inaugural tournament in Dhaka this weekend. Players, from 10 teams, were aiming for a place in the first national squad as cricket continued to make inroads in football’s popularity. The female players, mostly students or members of law enforcement agencies, wore cricket trousers and shirts as the men would. In the past, wrestling, football and long-distance swimming competitions had met with resistance from religious groups in the Muslim-dominated nation, but the cricket organisers said there had been no opposition to their tournament.
