Blowers’ wrong smoke

When the radio commentary boxes were moved from the pavilion at Trent Bridge to the magnificent new Radcliffe Road stand at the opposite end, the Test Match Special team viewed new scenery from 1998 onwards. “There’s rather a nice hill over there behind the pavilion…” enthused Henry Blofeld during live broadcast in an anecdote related by Peter Baxter in his excellent new book Inside The Box.  “with a church on it. And, look, there’s a column of smoke. The vicar must be having a barbecue.” Two Nottinghamshire committee men visiting the box quickly corrected him. It was the Wilford Hill Crematorium.
