Essex make a point

Rain ended the champions challenge match between Essex and Victoria at Chelmsford in 1991 when the Australians were about to suffer an innings defeat on 56 for eight, destroyed by spinners John Childs and Peter Such. The four-day contest, sponsored by Britannic Assurance, could have ended argument about the relative strengths of domestic cricket in the two countries, but the dank end of September was the only slot, and the idea was discontinued. Victoria’s captain Simon O’Donnell described the trip as “enormously beneficial”, though it was difficult to see how.
