Fairbrother’s feast

The glut of runs in the championship this season reminds me of 1990. Neil Fairbrother scored a century per session in his 366 against Surrey at the Oval as Lancashire looked like becoming the first county to make 1,000 runs in an innings, but they ‘collapsed’ to 863 all out. Earlier Surrey had not declared until they had reached 707 for nine, their captain Ian Greig hitting 291 at number seven. The pitch was so firm that the surface remained unmarked for four days.
