The success of that superb veteran writer David Foot in winning the cricket section of the 2007 British Sports Book Awards at the Café Royal in London on Tuesday was almost upstaged by a gaffe from The Times sports editor Tim Hallisey. He announced the wrong winner of best biography and had to correct himself as Leo McKinstry, author of Sir Alf , was being applauded to the stage. Matt Rendell was hastily summoned for his cycling book The Death of Marco Pantani . Foot’s book, co-written by Ivan Ponting, has the ponderous title 60 Summers: Somerset Cricket Since The War (Fairfield Books) and is apparently sold out. Foot and Ponting both forgot to take their trophy back to their table.
