THE ICC are to consider handing “match termination” decisions to the referee in international games as a result of the Pakistan versus Darrell Hair farce at the Oval last summer, which ended in the world’s first Test forfeiture.
At the ICC chief executives meeting in Fujairah in United Arab Emirates on Thursday and Friday this week the role and title of the ICC match referee will be discussed. The ICC executive board chewed this over at their meeting in Bombay in November last year.
Dave Richardson, an ICC official, commented: “The reality is that the match referee is the ‘chief executive’ of an international cricket match who is responsible for liaising with the teams, the boards, the venue and other stakeholders to ensure the smooth running of a match.”
Charlie says: The ICC say not, but the umpires’ authority could be compromised.
