Lye’s long history goes up in smoke

THE pavilion at Lye, one of the oldest cricket clubs in the Midlands, has been burnt down a year before they are due to celebrate their 150th anniversary.

Arson is suspected at the Stourbridge Road ground in Birmingham. The blaze in the early hours of the morning gutted the wooden building and destroyed old photos and memorabilia tracing a long history lost in the fire.

Committee member Len Wright said everyone at the club was in a state of shock over what had happened. The pavilion had to be rebuilt in the 1970s after another fire.
