THE death of Manjural Islam in a motorcycle accident at the age of 22 upset the Bangladesh squad and took the edge off their fine performance against India in the World Cup. His passing would strike a chord with a group of English county players, because the left-arm spinner, a Test and one-day international player, appeared in all three one-dayers against England A on their recent tour and ended up as Bangladesh A’s most successful bowler.
In the final one-dayer in Dhaka he dismissed Steven Davies, Nick Compton and Tom Smith and hit 38 not out to steer the Bangladeshis to a comfortable five-wicket victory. He was travelling from Khulna’s first class championship game in Dhaka with fellow player Sajjadul Hasan when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a bus. Hasan was also killed.
