Palmer’s great day

Charles Palmer, as Leicestershire’s captain, brought himself on for an over of medium pace to facilitate a switch of ends and carried on bowling to finish with 14-12-7-8 against mighty Surrey at Grace Road in 1955. At one stage his analysis was 12-12-0-8, which would have been even better next over if a catch had not been dropped. Apparently he hit a damp patch unerringly and did so again in the second innings with 13-12-1-0 as Surrey won by seven wickets. It was a real one-off match for Palmer, suffering from a bad back at the time.
