Perilous for umpires

Judith West, a woman umpire from Clevedon, was hit on the head by a straight drive from the Somerset batsman Keith Parsons in a second-team one-dayer near the end of a hot day at Bristol in 1996. The blow fractured her skull and ruptured an eardrum, but she vowed to continue her umpiring career when discharged from Bristol Royal Infirmary. Alan Whitehead, on the first class cricuit, was hit on the head by a bowler’s elbow that season.
