Shiv’s stained honour

Shiv Chanderpaul walked out after the first day of Guyana’s Carib Beer first class championship match against Windward Islands in Georgetown in March to attend the West Indies Players’ Association awards dinner in Trinidad, where he won all three international honours. The Guyana management had not been informed about his plans and were understandably upset when Chanderpaul was ‘retired out’ on his overnight score of 78. Windward Islands were incensed at this lack of respect and refused to allow a substitute. The Windwards manager Lockhard Sebastien said: “This is not a curry goat match; this is a first-class encounter. Things like this are allowed to happen and we wonder why West Indies cricket is in the state that it is in.”
