Statham’s big honour

A testimonial dinner for Brian Statham at the Grosvenor House hotel in London, organised by his old England new-ball partner Fred Trueman, raised £70,000 in a single evening in 1989. That must be worth double these days. News that Statham was suffering from brittle bone disease at the age of 58 unleashed a surge of goodwill. The mild-mannered Lancastrian died 11 years later.
