Wisden Almanack wants Fletcher out

EVEN Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, published this week, thinks that the Duncan Fletcher reign as England coach has run its course.

The editor Matthew Engel felt that Fletcher, after years of success, had become detached from other selectors, from potential advisors and from the county game, a direct cause of the 5-0 Ashes defeat in Australia this winter.

The untenable gamble on Ashley Giles was one piece of evidence cited. “It is time for renewal,” declared Engel, “and there can be no renewal without change at the top.” And if he had been able to add more words before the almanack’s deadline, he might well have suggested that Fletcher was losing dressing room respect, judging by ill-advised World Cup partying at Rodney Bay in St Lucia by a few players in the early hours of Saturday morning before the Sunday group match against Canada.
